What you write here is intriguing, Jay, although I confess I never really gave this aspect of writing a lot of thought before. I tend to focus on using strong nouns and very active verbs in order to cut back as much as I can on too many adjectives and adverbs. Having read your essay through slowly, rereading certain passages that I knew I needed to think more about, I can say that I will try to be more conscious about distancing my reader with the “writing equivalent” of movie subtitles!
