Moonlight Lover

A dream with eyes wide open

The moon slipped into
her attic room
like a guilty lover
uncertain of his welcome.

Half-retreating
silver-skinned
gentle to the touch.

Planting ghostly kisses
that will not yield much.

A room flooded with moonlight is magical, but it can also be a bit disconcerting.

It was thought at one time that a person who slept in a room suffused with moonlight might easily have the balance of their mind affected.

Consider the word lunatic.

Luna was the goddess of the moon, according to the early Romans. Her power grew stronger with the waxing of the moon. Lunatic refers to Luna’s power to make unwary mortals moonstruck.

But I love the way moonlight can transform the landscape, making the most mundane objects appear mystical. In the moonlight every shadow is softened, every sharp angle loses its edge.

Gazing at the moon, even for just a few moments, thrills my mind and stirs my heart. I have always preferred the gleam of silver to the glitter of gold.
