Mary, when I was young my friends would lie on their beach blankets, slathered with baby oil and iodine! Or hold foil shields near their faces to direct the sun to shine even more strongly on their faces! I didn't do this because of my Armenian heritage which meant I had darker skin and tanned with no effort. But still all that sun exposure can take a toll, one I haven't been asked to pay yet, but who knows what might be down the line...
