I must admit that the male hummers this year were pretty aggressive to the females, frequently driving them away from the feeders. The males seem to have left in early September. Several females remained behind for a few more weeks and it made me feel good to see them enjoying the feeders without being driven away!

I know what you mean about feeling better about the end of summer by putting up feeders for winter birds. If you have a moment, you might enjoy this short poem I wrote few years ago about that experience and how it helps to have those reliable winter birds make their faithful appearance in our yards.
