The sullen summer sky
too long overburdened with grief
too long denied needed relief
lashes out at the desiccated earth
hurls diamond-tipped spears
carves runnels in the dirt
topples the shallow-rooted trees
batters whatever remains
drives the innocent insects and birds
to insufficient shelter from the rain.
